Commensality: the Practice of Eating Together
Something magical happens when we sit down at a table together.
Stories are shared, plates are passed, drinks are poured. By sharing a meal, every person leaves that table forever changed. Maybe it was the conversation, or trying a food you haven’t before.
Loneliness has become a worse and worse problem for younger generations. Dinner parties and last-minute hangs suddenly seem like an insurmountable feat. But not when we know why these moments are so important.
Commensality is culture.
Introduce your friends to a recipe you’re proud of (or not so proud of!). Bring a bottle of wine from a place you just visited or heard about. Have people over to see your collection of plants or enjoy a game night.
Coming together at the table is an essential part of what makes us human. I hope you’ll join me at mine.
